Ki-young Kim - Hanyo aka The Housemaid (1960)

The film is a domestic thriller telling of a family's destruction by the introduction of a sexually predatory femme fatale into the household. A composer has just moved into a two-story house with his wife and two children. When his wife becomes exhausted from working at a sewing machine to support the family, the composer hires a housemaid to help with the work around the house. The new housemaid behaves strangely, catching rats with her hands, spying on the composer, seducing him and eventually becoming pregnant by him.







Allow me to add to the hype: this film is as delirious as they come. Starting out as a typical realist glance into 1960's South Korea as centered on a upwardly-mobile family, after the plot gets settled, becomes a hysterical and expressionistic tale of corrosive sin and deception. The transformation of one night's flirtation into a grandiose moral eradication is the one of the most stunning turns of atmosphere I've ever seen in a film. Also amazing is how your view of the characters changes dramatically as they are faced with this living hell. While researching about the director, I found out that the actress who played the housemaid, Eun-shim Lee, fulfilled the part so well that she couldn't find work after this movie. Audience members were literally screaming for her death at the original showings! See this film just for her, you won't regret it! La sirvienta
Este film de 1960 de Kim Ki-young representa un verdadero rescate del arcn del olvido a manos del seor que auspici su restauracin, nada menos que Martin Scorsese. La historia comienza con un tringulo amoroso entre un profesor de piano puritano y conservador, su esposa aparentemente ideal y la taciturna sirvienta de la casa, una jovencita que queda embarazada y desencadena una serie de venganzas reciprocas. Lo que en un inicio parece ser una trama romntica clsica se va torciendo hacia el melodrama psictico y termina desembocando en una comedia negra que hasta cuenta con una hilarante interpelacin final. El trabajo del elenco, el guin y la realizacin son inobjetables, estupendos para el nivel profesional y tcnico de la poca. Nada que envidiar a las epopeyas del corazn del genial Douglas Sirk. La servante
C'est, au dpart, le rcit d'un banal adultre. Un homme, honorable professeur de musique, trompe un soir sa femme avec la jeune servante du couple. Cette nuit d'amour va engendrer une situation intenable car la servante tombe enceinte et menace de dshonorer le couple en annonant la situation tout en exigeant d'avoir dsormais l'homme pour elle seule. S'ensuivent une srie d'affrontements brutaux, ahurissants, un avortement provoqu par une chute dans l'escalier, le meurtre d'un enfant, une tentative d'empoisonnement, tout cela dtermin par la lutte de deux femmes pour la possession d'un homme faible et vellitaire.

Ce qui frappe immdiatement le spectateur qui tomberait sur cette Servante, c'est l'incroyable violence de situations qui y sont reprsentes, c'est un cheminement inluctable et thtral vers le pire qui emporte les protagonistes, prisonniers de leurs pulsions, vers la catastrophe, la mort, la destruction.

La Servante relve du drame psychologique en quasi-huis-clos (remarquable utilisation du dcor et de son escalier central), du mlodrame rotique, du film d'horreur. C'est surtout un film qui retrouve l'essence mme de ce que peut tre un grand et cruel naturalisme cinmatographique, celui qu'ont pu, en leur temps, exprimer un Stroheim ou Bunuel. Une impression qu'une courte et rassurante squence finale, sans doute justifie par la censure, ne parviendra pas dissiper. (Jean-Franois Rauger - La Cinmathque franaise)
